New Dining Scene Hakkasan Jakarta Mixes Cantonese Cuisine With Creativity and Style
From the moment you step into Hakkasan Jakarta, you are bound for an incomparable experience, one that is surely beyond what you may have expected from such an establishment. While an elevator ride to the 25th floor may seem like a mundane episode, what awaits is a blend of design, music, and ultimately, food, that is not only going to astound your senses, but also leave you wanting more.
Hakkasan has brought a world-class dining experience to the Indonesian capital, serving modern and authentic Cantonese cuisine that is adding a new touch to the dining scene here in Jakarta. This arrival comes with special cocktails and an extensive wine list, and is presented with breathtaking views from the 25th floor of the Alila SCBD Hotel, which has also opened only recently.
The Eat Vacation’s team culinary journey at Hakkasan Jakarta began with the Crispy duck salad, a signature Hakkasan menu that is served with pomelo, pine nut and shallot. The introductory dish perfectly described the experience we were about to have, as it harmonises the crispness of a well-fried duck meat and the lightness of the salad mix with which it was served.
The creativity of the dishes available at Hakkasan Jakarta is prepared by Chef de Cuisine Sky Wong Kum Choy, who takes his inspiration from the childhood meals he had as a kid. His adoration for Cantonese cuisine is derived from his maternal Hakka roots, and is evident in his culinary creations.
Soon, the table was filled with a plate of their Crispy quail egg puff, which is part of the special ‘Only at Jakarta’ menu, and another signature Hakkasan dish, the Supreme dim sum platter comprising of scallop shui mai, seabass dumpling, truffle har gau, lobster crab dumpling. The freshness of the food we were having, combined with its stunning presentation, makes part of the experience of dining at Hakkasan Jakarta.
Diners should definitely treat themselves to the Jasmine tea smoked beef rib and the Steamed grouper with kaffir sambal sauce, the latter belonging to another one of their ‘Only at Jakarta’ menu, and captures a mix of the traditional Indonesian sambal sauce with Hakkasan Cantonese cuisine. These dishes represent the usage of fresh local ingredients to the contemporary menu, that retains not only the essence of conventional Cantonese cuisine but also makes it exceptional.
For most people, the idea of pairing wine with Cantonese cuisine may feel like unfamiliar territory. However, Hakkasan’s sommelier team has made sure that each wine goes well with the food served at the restaurants. Hakkasan Jakarta’s Wine Expert, Philippe Loiseau, told Eat Vacation that the wine-drinking experience is meant to balance the challenging flavours of Cantonese cuisines.
“We really want to have the wine which balances, [and] bring some extra character, to the food we are serving,” Loiseau said.
In addition, Hakkasan Jakarta will have a new team of certified sommeliers soon, Loiseau added, as they are amid taking a course from the WSET School London, from which they will receive their WSET Level 1 Award. WSET is the flagship course provider for the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET).
Hakkasan Jakarta also offers an exciting selection for cocktails, including their signature Hakkatini which features orange infused Ketel One vodka, mixed with Campari, Cointreau, brandy, apple and orange bitters, as well as the special Smoky Fuchow, which is only available in Jakarta, comprising of plantation dark rum, sake, lapsang souchong tea, cranberry, lemon, lime and Angostura bitters.
It will be incomplete to talk about Hakkasan Jakarta without mentioning its interior styling, which was designed by Paris-based GBRH Interior Design, and mixes both Asian and Western influences. The ambient lighting during the evening makes for an intimate setting for conversations after work, while the backdrop of the city provides a cool, chic spot for an enjoyable lunch hour.
Furthermore, the music they put on at this location has especially been curated from London, giving yet another special touch to the authentic Hakkasan experience. Established in 2001 in London, Hakkasan has since become one of the world’s most distinguished global restaurant. It boasts a total of 12 global locations, including in Mumbai, Dubai, Las Vegas and Shanghai. As part of their commendable accolades, two Hakkasan restaurants in London have been awarded the prestigious Michelin Star Rating.
Hakkasan Jakarta is the first Hakkasan in Southeast Asia. Later in 2019, Hakkasan will launch its rooftop experience on the 26th floor of the Alila SCBD Hotel, featuring multiple outdoor bars, banquettes and semi-private VIP booths, with Jakarta’s top DJs set to liven up the Jakarta nightlife experience at the open-air venue.
When it comes to dessert, the menu comes with specific recommendations for each option, allowing for yet another memorable dining experience to conclude what is bound to be talk of the town. Hakkasan Jakarta’s Es teler is a fine-dining take on a classic treat, while their Egg custard nest is a treat for both the taste buds and the eyes of the beholder. Finally, the special, ‘Only at Jakarta’ Black swan puff with musang king durian is a delight you simply cannot miss from Hakkasan.
The arrival of Hakkasan Jakarta to the city adds a wholesome new layer for residents of the metropolitan. There is careful detail, as evident in the restaurant’s interiors to their artfully arranged plates, that makes for an immersive culinary experience.
