Liu Men Melaka Represents Multiculturalism and History in Malaysia

Liu Men Melaka succumbed to a transformation from a six-shophouse prewar building, to a charming boutique hotel.

Decades before the war of Independence, six shophouses stood in Melaka in Jalan Toking, where six families lived. Before the end of the 1940’s the six families left and deserted the shophouses. Eventually, these shophouses were renovated and transformed into a large single family home. Now in the 21st century, the prewar structure was given a new life into a charming 30 room boutique hotel, Liu Men Melaka.

Liu Men mean ‘six doors’, which holds a special meaning. Six, or (六, LIÙ), is an auspicious number and is believed to be the inspiration behind the name. Liu Men Melaka blends Eastern and Western influences seamlessly, which an art deco style from colonial times combined with Eastern vibrant reds that symbolise joy and luck, identifying with Peranakan culture.

Although the art deco style is prominent in Liu Men, the Eastern influence in the patterns are also evident.

Peranakan culture is very significant in Melaka, one of Malaysia’s oldest cities. Melaka’s economy started to flourish in the late 1930’s during its role as a British colonial port city. Its multiculturalism from decades ago made Melaka one of Malaysia’s favourite getaways from large cities, being a soothing and comforting spot.

Aside of the prominence of British culture from its colonialism days, Kristangs who settled in Portuguese settlements are also significant, with fishing being a main part of their life. The Indian communities are also prominent, most of those whom are descendants of spice and textile traders. Jalan Bendahara nearby Liu Men has the exotic taste of South Indian cuisine as well as Malay flavours. “Our hotel is also a gate to the Peranakan culture, to guests who are looking to immerse themselves in a world of colours, art and culture in personable atmosphere,” said Dadang Setiawan, General Manager Liu Men Melaka.

Having the appearance of being conjured from an Asian romance novel, Liu Men Melaka is a label of Préférence Hotels by TAUZIA. Préférence Hotels offers a unique selection of hotels with distinctive surroundings. Each one represents distinct ambiance along with the charming local history. Liu Men Melaka becomes a shining addition showcasing the unique, authenticity and allure of Melaka to the world. Visit tauziahotels.com or @tauziahotels on Instagram for more information.
